Slap Bass lesson – Breaking the Mould!
Ok… we ALL like slap bass right?… I’m sure when you first heard your first slap bass riff you thought it was the coolest thing you’d ever heard! Well… me too! But – one thing that so many bass players suffer from is only being able to play slap riffs in the key of E. This happens because we rely …
Study Piece – ‘Donna lee’
Donna Lee was recorded by legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius in 1978. It was at this point that the perceived role of the bass guitar was changed forever! And, when I first heard this groundbreaking recording my life was also changed forever! Because the electric bass guitar is such a new instrument, as yet there aren’t really any true ‘study pieces’ …

Palm Muting Technique on the Bass
Here’s an new lesson about right hand technique. I’m sure you’ve been in a situation before where the bass you’re playing might not quite suit the ‘vibe’ of the song. You know what I mean… You wish you had a super-modern tone for some songs and a vintage tone for others… Well, I’ve got a trick up my sleeve!… Want …
Right Hand Dynamics on Bass
In this new bass lesson, I’m talking about right hand dynamics on the bass. Many bass players or students coming to me, haven’t got particularly good dynamics –if any, and it’s a very big flaw as we shall see. Using a pick (Plectrum) #1
“Is it a good thing or a bad thing to play with a pick?” is a question I’m asked quite often by my students. Perhaps because they haven’t seen me playing with a pick (or plectrum) in any of my bass lessons? ;) The short answer is that it’s neither ‘good’ nor ‘bad’: you’re not ‘cheating’ if you’re using a …
Right and Left Hand Positioning
In this tutorial I’m talking about right and left hand positioning: I see soooo many players with a terrible hands positioning… they’ll probably end up with a RSI –Repeated Strain Injury, which is not cool at all and can keep you away from your bass for weeks or months. If you haven’t seen my tutorial about strap height, please check …
How to Build Speed & Accuracy on the Bass #2
This is the second part of my lessons on building speed and accuracy on the bass. In this lesson, we’re going into the exact same process, …
How to Build Speed & Accuracy on the Bass #1
Speed… Almost every learning bassist wants to play faster, which is understandable, but don’t forget that speed is something you build day after day and it mustn’t be at the expense of accuracy. Actually, trying to play too fast, i.e. play much faster overnight, can cause mental and physical blocks that will slow down your progress. So, what can you …
Playing Fast Legato Lines on the Bass!

This video will show you what they are, in case you don’t know. Legato playing allows you, among other things, to …
