The Ultimate Bass String Shootout - Flatwounds Vs Roundwounds Vs Tapewounds

4/1/2024

Today, we're taking a fun and informative journey into the world of bass guitar strings. This isn’t an article about how to string a bass guitar, but rather, I’m going to be discussing the different types of bass strings out there:

Roundwounds vs flatwounds vs tapewounds.

As a lifelong bassist, I’ve used plenty of different strings, and I know which ones I prefer. However, the question is which one is best for you and how will it affect your bass playing?

Let’s find out!

Understanding Bass Guitar Strings: What’s the Difference?

Before delving into the comparison, let's briefly discuss each type of bass guitar string:

1. Flatwound Strings. Known for their smooth texture and warm, mellow tone, flatwound strings feature a flat outer winding that produces a more subdued sound compared to other types.

2. Tapewound Strings. As the name suggests, tapewound strings are wrapped in a layer of tape, resulting in a smooth, polished surface. They offer a balance between the warmth of flatwounds and the brightness of roundwounds.

3. Roundwound Strings. These strings are characterized by their textured surface, which is created by wrapping a round wire around the core. Roundwounds deliver a bright, cutting tone favored by many bassists across various genres.

Now that we know what the differences between the strings are, it’s time to answer the age-old question – which one is best?

To demonstrate, I’ve played various bass lines and melodies on bass guitars equipped with flatwound, tapewound, and roundwound strings. In the video, you’ll get a firsthand glimpse into how and why they sound different.

While I’ll describe the strings in more detail below, I suggest watching the video so you can really hear the differences.

Flatwounds

Flatwound strings offer a smooth, mellow vibe. They're perfect for a vintage sound with a subdued tone.

Every time I use them, I can't help but appreciate the nostalgia they bring. Honestly, they're a great choice if you're looking for that classic, old-school warmth!

Tapewounds

Alright, confession time – I’ve never actually played with tapewounds before making this video, so it was uncharted territory for me!

That being said, they've completely blown me away. They have a flatwound vibe but with unique tension and a tone that's hard to describe.

They’re surprisingly smooth and polished, and strike a balance between warmth and clarity, making them a versatile choice for a wide range of musical styles. I imagine they’d be right at home for any kind of slap bass!

Roundwounds

And finally, we come to roundwound strings, a staple in the bass guitar world. With their textured surface and bright, punchy tone, roundwounds deliver that classic bass sound loved by many. From the best funky bass players to more classic rock n’ rollers, these strings are used by everyone.

Roundwounds are my personal favorite. They bring a bright, raspy sound that I adore, and offer versatility and character, especially when the tone is dialed down.

Which String Is Best for You?

Ultimately, the string that’s best for you is a matter of personal preference. While I love the variety that all three string types offer, my heart leans toward the roundwounds. They feel like home to me, and I can effortlessly create my signature sound with them!

However, your journey might lead you in a different direction. The best way to find your ideal strings is to try them all and see what resonates with your playing style and musical preferences.
