Matt Garrison... 'God Father' of the modern bass player

Matt Garrison is one of my favorite bass players and has been a great influence on my playing over the last few years. I think Garrison was the first and the spearhead of what I like to call 'the super bass players' for lack of a better term - players such as Hadrien Feraud, Janek Gwizdala, Tony Grey, Skuli Sverrisson etc. It's more than chops... of course we've had MANY fantastic bass players for years... Jaco, Jeff Berlin, Gary Willis, Anthony Jackson, Alain Caron. What we are hearing now is different, more modern styles in phrasing and application of more sophisticated harmony. For me Garrison was the first to apply this different approach/sound.

Here's a clip of Garrison improvising over a minor blues.
