What is Hip - Tower of Power - Bass Line Analysis (L#223)
"What is Hip" has got to be one of the coolest 16th note funk grooves ever written...
It was originally played by one of the original godfathers of funk, Rocco Prestia of the amazing band Tower of Power.
There's so much to be learned from mastering this riff...
- 16th note funk technique
- Plucking hand consistency and articulation
- Plucking hand stamina
- Playing octave patterns within a 16th note groove
- And heaps more...
Ready to start grooving? Let's do this!
As always, see you in the shed...

PS. If you didn't already hear, in under a week, I'm going to be releasing "The Beginning Jazz Survival Guide for Bassists" course into the Academy course library here at SBL.
I've taken everything you need to know to really get you going with jazz... and I've put it all in one course. And honestly, I think this course is one of the most actionable and focused courses I've ever created. In short, if you work through the materials and exercises in the course, it's going to have a HUGE effect on your bass playing - and I can say that without a shadow of a doubt.
Over the last 3 years we've released many courses into the Academy at SBL... over 50 hours worth of content. But this new jazz course is probably the one I'm most proud of because this is the one I REALLY wish I'd had when I was trying to get into jazz.
