Samba is a genre of music that comes from Brazil, and is typically played at a pretty fast tempo (faster than the bossa nova style, for instance). Like the bossa nova, it has a certain root–5th bass pattern that you can learn and use on almost any song in this style. If you play out either professionally or semi professionally in either the world of jazz or Brazilian music, you will at some point have to play a samba. So, don’t get caught not knowing what to do! This particular tune has the same chord progression as the bossa nova / jazz standard called “One Note Samba,” written by the great Antonio Carlos Jobim. So by learning this, you’ll also gain a new piece in your repertoire for the next jazz jam session.
