In Conversation with Oteil Burbridge - From the Allman Brothers to Dead & Company

April 16, 2018

About this episode

In this interview I talk to Oteil Burbridge about his drum-rooted rhythmic approach and how he’s taken the 6-string bass to new heights.

Back in 1997 a DVD alerted me to this new cat on the scene who was blowing everybody away with his amazing chordal approach and some seriously heroic soloing. Some 20 years on and I finally got to meet Oteil Burbridge when he stopped by our studio in Brooklyn. Oteil has always maintained a hectic pace as a sideman - working with everyone from Col. Bruce Hampton and Tedeschi Trucks Band to the Allman Brothers and Dead & Company. In this interview we get to grips with his approach to melody, his singing and chordal work and his jaw-dropping facility on 6-string bass - something that’s uniquely his own.
