The Who's bassist VS "The SBL Session Challenge"

Hey, Scott here… it’s Saturday again, so let’s get the grooves rolling ;)

If you’ve ever wondered what the session legends are thinking the first time they’re faced with recording a track they’ve never seen or heard before… this lesson is for you.

Here's how the story goes.

"The Who" were playing at Wembley.

The amazing bassist Jon Button was playing bass for them (he took over from Pino Palladino!)

So, we pulled some strings. Made some calls.

And before you know it, we'd kidnapped Jon and hauled him into a studio in the deep dark depths of Soho in London.

What happened next???...

He was faced with "The SBL Session Challenge"

We gave him a lead sheet to a piece of music he’d never seen before.

We then got him to talk through his thought process when looking at a new piece of music.

And then… we hit record and he performed the entire piece (including the bass solo section... yikes!).

Zero run through.

Just red light - GO!
