As bass players, we normally focus ninety-five percent of our time in the supportive role of a group—laying down the bottom end, locking in with the drums, and creating bass lines that make audiences nod their heads to the music. So it’s expected that many of us can feel daunted when the opportunity comes to take a solo or improvise outside of our comfort zone.
