The Soloing Concepts of John Patitucci
Trailer
Summary
John Patitucci is one of the bass world’s greatest living improvisers (on both bass guitar and upright bass). From his groundbreaking work with Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter to his own musical explorations, John has spent decades evolving and pushing musical boundaries. In this course, he shares his approach to soloing.
“A lot of bass players don’t know where to start when it comes to constructing a great solo,” says John. “Even once they’ve learnt their scales and they know ‘the language’, rhythmically or harmonically – there’s no statement, no answer – there’s nothing to take the audience along with them. In this course, I’m going to help change all of that.”
In this course, you'll learn how to step away from the ‘root-centred-ness’ of the usual bass player role and start to explore melody. You’ll learn how to find extended chord shapes and make wider melodic leaps across the fingerboard. Most importantly, once you’ve assimilated all this information, you’ll be able to start creating your own soloing vocabulary.
In this course you’re going to learn:
- How to broaden your vocabulary by listening to the jazz greats.
- Why relying on pre-arranged patterns and licks is a bad idea.
- How to approach upper chord extensions.
- How to REALLY improvise with the blues scale.
- Why you shouldn’t be put off if you’re not schooled in music theory.
- And much more.
